All my child guitar students (especially ages 10 and under) that learn to play with a click from the get-go ALWAYS exhibit a far more mature sense of time as they develop. The metronome is simply a tool to strengthen one's inner time sense, not replace or distract from it.

Metronomes are annoying. Instructor told me to get one, but I never used it.

Jeff is stressing the importance of developing internalized time- his point is irrefutable- he refers to Gary Burton in example to demonstrate the metronome as a "tool" to correct an issue in lieu of having a great drummer to practice with. Nothing wrong with his point at all. The part people are over looking: Every person is born with a natural flow or "feel". This is internal, and will naturally develop through asimilation imitation and interaction.

Agreed to a point. The idea is to develop an internal "clock" as accurate as a metronome. This can be "practiced" using advanced metronomes that go below 40bpm. Ex, try playing to 10bpm while internally feeling 80bpm and see you land on the click after the silent 7 remaining counts. What he talks about during 1:44-2:40 has to do with the Culture. A Culture with an open mind and love for dance, music and partying....a bit different than the "average" USA household..:)

As a performing, teaching professional musician with a percussion performance degree, I have to strongly disagree with Jeff here. Yes, I do 'get' exactly what he's saying. He's prioritizing note accuracy before rhythmic accuracy in learning. What Jeff forgets (or overlooks) is that there would be no point in playing notes if there were no rhythms or spaces to accommodate them! Playing the notes in a rhythmically accurate fashion is literally 50% of playing the music!
