As New York City's garbage export sector grows, more flatcars must be pressed into service to handle the increasing numbers of MSW trash containers being transported. These empty flatcars had been stored in East Carbon, Utah, and are headed to the east coast for trash hauling. This "bare table" train was a cooperative effort between the Rocky Mountain Line and the NYCS.

  • The Atlas cars do have a *slightly* low coupler height, but putting a "lower shelf" coupler on there (which is prototype practice anyway) will compensate by guaranteeing the car will not come uncoupled in a consist when coupled to a properly-heighted coupler. I use Kadee 119 semi-scale shelf coupler, and cut the top shelf off with a Xuron tool to make it into a lower shelf coupler. I do plan on getting the new Atlas car; when all is said and done, I will have over 200 trash flats.

  • On the Atlas cars,I used Kadee #5's and the couplers are low,the Kadee washers do not fit over the bolster to raise the coupler. What # Kadee did you use? Are you going to get any of the new Atlas cars.....and where sre your MSW trash containers for these cars?

  • @chooch11657 The trash containers are currently in the process of being superdetailed and weathered. I had custom decals made for all of the tiny little warning stickers/labels that were not printed on the stock Atlas containers. I've got well over 900 containers to do, so it's going to be a while :-) Thanks for your interst in my video!

  • I just bought my first 8 flat cars made by Atlas,do your cars have Kadee 5's couplers and what type of wheels are you using, the ones that came with the car by Atlas or Intermountain's? That is an impressive train so I am making one!

  • @chooch11657 The black flatcars are actually all Walthers 89' Bethlehem flatcars heavily modified to match prototype pictures. The cars have Walthers trucks and Intermountain wheels. The red flats in the video are Atlas, and I kept the 33" Atlas wheels on them. All of the cars are equipped with semi-scale Kadee shelf couplers, with the top shelf cut off to simulate a prototype "lower shelf" coupler found on the real cars.

  • How many flatcars total?

  • 58 flatcars in this train.

  • Don't forget, CSX also uses a variety of rebuilt wood chip cars for the trash service.
