Prior to the 2010 earthquake, sexual violence was already a serious problem in Haiti. However, the circumstances following the earthquake in January 2010 resulted in several factors that exacerbated the vulnerability of women and girls.
To date, UNHCR has assisted more than 3,500 survivors by providing them with shelter and introducing them to income generating activities which help them to recover and start a new life.
