Acura at Oxmoor's Service Manager, Todd Wurtsmith, talks about what to check as we get ready for winter in the Kentuckiana area.

Coolant / Anti-Freeze: Your car's coolant / anti-freeze is equally as important in cold weather as hot weather? Because it prevents the same water in your car's system from freezing up and destroying portions of your car. Not only does it prevent freezing it also prevents over heating no matter how cold it gets?

Additionally, in cold weather, anti-freeze is important to prevent the evaporation of vital fluids. Water evaporates rapidly, whereas anti-freeze does not. The lubricating properties of anti-freeze are also very important as well. This is perhaps one of the most crucial uses of anti-freeze, to keep the heat in your vehicle running. Without this precious liquid in your car's system, you won't have any heat to stay warm when temperatures are frosty. Many people aren't aware of this fact, and they think that when their heat stops working that they have a mechanical problem of some sort. They fear radiator leaks, heater core failures, a thermostat being either stuck open or closed, and all of the other possible things that can go wrong that causes a car's heater to stop working. The truth is, what many don't know, is that being low on anti-freeze can cause your heat to stop working.

So make sure that the coolant is at the proper level. You also want to look at the condition of the coolant / anti-freeze. If it appears dirty or discolored it should be replaced.

Washer Fluid: Winter weather means you'll be using lots of washer fluid as you try to keep your windshield sparkly. A mile stuck behind an 18-wheeler will have your windshield looking like a Desert Humvee if you're low on washer fluid. You'll want to use Washer Fluid specifically made for Cold Weather.

Engine Oil: Of course regular oil changes are always important, but even more so in the winter. Cold weather starts can be especially hard on your car's engine. Fresh motor oil and a clean filter will help to protect your engine on the coldest of mornings.

Tire Pressure: Finally, you'll want to check the air pressure on your tires. The air pressure in your tires tends to drop a little in cold weather. So check the air pressure and make sure that all tires are at the proper level. You can find the recommended level on the inside of the driver's side door jamb. If you can't find your car's recommendation a generally safe level is 35 pounds of pressure until you can find the manufacturer's recommended level. Please feel free to call us at (855) 268-7010 we'll gladly help you find your car's recommended air pressure.

Of course many people find that winter also means less free time. So if you find yourself short of time simply call us at (855) 268-7010 and we'll do a complete winterization for you.
