Louis Andriessen's classic minimalist work "Hoketus" was presented during the 2011 Make Music New York festival. Completed in 1976, the pioneering 25-minute piece uses two spatially-separated quintets. For this one-time-only performance that was co-produced by the Darmstadt Institute, one group played on the street, while the other ensemble performed across the plaza on the outdoor balcony of the New York Stock Exchange building. The large crowd clearly enjoyed this irregularly pulsing, energetic piece, wherein the 2 groups alternate notes with split-second timing, never playing simultaneously, creating melodies through the interactions between them, using a "hocketing" technique developed in the 14th century.
The new music group Yarn/Wire led the performers, who included: Ian Antonio, Russell Greenberg (congas); Laura Barger, Ning Yu (pianos); Michael Gallope, Jacob Rhodebeck (keyboards); Erin Lesser, Christa Van Alstine (pan flutes); Tony Gedrich, Joe Higgins (electric bass).

This is indescribably awesome. I wish I had been there. Andriessen is one of my favorites and I don't think he's performed enough!
