Buddhism is not God, but teacher. Khmer people believed in Mahayana Buddhism from the 1st century to the 13th century. Mahayana Buddhism is a grand vehicle can bring many believers to where they wish to go after they died and they will reborn again and it is less severe to practice than Theravada.
Khmer Prince Tamlin, a son of Great Khmer Buddhist King Jayavarman VII went to Srei Lanka at the end of the 13th century and brought to Khmer people of Theravada Buddhism which is a small vehicle can bring less believer to where they wish to go after they died and they will not reborn again and it is more severe to practice than Mahayana.
