With the winter solstice coming up in a couple of days, I figured that it was time to post this song. Wrote it a month or two back, but it's appropriate to the season. Game of Thrones themed, but not -too- spoiler-y. Lyrics follow. Yes, I'm aware there are some minor differences between what I wrote and how I sung it this particular time.

A Song of Snow
- (c) Michael Kelly, 2011

Raised as an outcast inside my own home
and cursed with the bastard name, Snow
Little I listened nor took well to heart
All the words every Stark needs to know
Winter is coming, and never forget
The divided will pay with their lives
Alone, a wolf starves or succumbs to the cold
But united, the wolf pack survives

Bitter the season for wolves all alone
Nameless and heartless and far from home
Cold the winds blow-- and soon snow will fall
Be prepared now, for winter is coming

Through all of my life here in deep discontent
Was it clear that I'd never belong
Though beloved by my father, his lady detests
the reminder of how she'd been wronged
But even for bastards, I've heard there's a place
Every man can stand equal and tall
Where my worth shall be measured in deeds and not birth
When I take up my post on the Wall

Through ages untold has the brotherhood there
Guarded fiercely the kingdoms of men
For the lawless and monstrous and horrors of old
Lie beyond, and may soon come again
But arriving, I find in dismay that the strength
of the Night Watch lies all in the past
And the brothers I've joined and forsaken my kin for
Are scoundrels and scum to the last

(Chorus)

I came seeking glory and kinship and pride
But there's naught here but hardship and scorn
It's no better to be a lone wolf among dogs
Than the runt among wolves I was born
I'm still an outsider, far worse than before
And it's treacherous company I keep
For my brothers in arms guard my back on the wall
But they sharpen their knives when I sleep

(Chorus)

We haven't the numbers to hold back the foe
They'll soon crush the Night Watch in their fist
An evil is coming from out of the cold
That we haven't a hope to resist
It's now I think back on the words of my House
And their warning is only too clear
The winter is coming for all of our land
But my winter is already here

Bitter the season for wolves all alone
Nameless and heartless and far from home
Cold the winds blow and soon Snow shall fall
For my doom with the winter is coming

  • Your songs are really good but they sound too similar in my opinion.

  • @LionheartSJZ - Can't really argue with you there. It's something that I never really noticed in my music until I started recording stuff for youtube. Think maybe I need to learn some new fingerpicking patterns to mix things up a bit.

  • You wrote this? Bravo...!

  • @Draxelzs Thanks :D

Here's hoping that either HBO get's the next season out or Mr Martin gets the next book out to get me inspired again. The setting is fertile ground for songwriting, but since I finished reading what's already out, my attention has shifted to other things.
