At Mission Evolve...

We pulled up near Mission Beach, trying not to get bogged we found a high enough spot to set up camp. It was a wet start to the festival but the warm rain didn't really bother anyone too much, and soon the weather cleared up and the music was pumping. People were exploring the Skull Cave checking out the location, blowing out about the surrounding rainforest which is home to many endemic species of flora and fauna including one of the largest remaining populations of Cassowaries.

Friday night saw a good band line up; my favourite band for the night was Sons of Sisters. Their heavy bass with funky riffs, heavy guitar and synth were backed by a rockin drummer. They are a band from Innisfail developing a good reputation in the pub music scene. One of the festival organisers Vanessa Bromely said, "it usually doesn't rain at this time of year but everyone here is having fun anyway!"

The next day we woke up and made a trip to Tully Gorge to check out the local scenery. We were impressed with the Hyrdo facility, not to mention the sheer beauty of the natural rainforest. On our way we laughed at a massive road sign cautioning us to slow down and be on the lookout for cassowaries. To our luck, only a few moments later we saw one crossing the road and took advantage of the photo op!

Saturday night was off the hook. I'm not trying to over hype it but, it was impressive. After a full day of talented musicians, the night was kicked up a couple of notches by The Bandawalla Moons (http://www.myspace.com/thebandawallamoons). This band play the type of fun, fat music that would be a great opening act for The Cat Empire or other high energy soul food music groups. They got the crowd up and shook the stage; it was a celebration of something special for them.

Claude Hay (http://www.myspace.com/claudehay) is an outstanding musician and a great entertainer. He's a one man band with a loop station and an entourage of musical instruments, he had us hooked. Everyone that gathered to watch the performance was busting out some fat dance moves, happy onlookers looked really happy and enjoyed their tripping. He kept the crowds enthusiasm and every time he tried to finish his set, the crowd kept calling him back on stage. He rocked it! And he appreciated the crowd for their participation. It reminded me back to the time when Ash Grunwald, Xavier Rudd and John Butler were first emerging onto the festival circuit. So, happy days!

There were many great bands with solid performances like Wandering Eyes, Juddah and Pachooka. The DJ's played long into the night and got up to whatever it is that they got up to, I was stuffed and went to sleeping bag... bed. We had a good recovery session with chilled out, acoustic music on Sunday morning. It was awesome to be a part of a festival like that! Cheers to the organisers, sponsors and volunteers, we had a great time!
