The choir of Westminster Cathedral sing Morten Lauridsen's stunningly beautiful setting of O Magnum Mysterium during Midnight Mass 2009.

O magnum mysterium
et admirabile sacramentum,
ut animalia viderent Dominum natum,
jacentem in præsepio.

Beata virgo, cujus viscera meruerunt
portare Dominum Christum, Alleluia!

Translation:

O great mystery
and wondrous sacrament,
that animals should see the newborn Lord
lying in their manger.

Blessed is the Virgin whose womb was worthy
to bear the Lord Jesus Christ. Alleluia!

  • If this is how humans, with all our faults and imperfections , sound this good, I can't imagine what the choirs of angels will be like..

  • I might be atheistic, but I still hold that belief in a God has motivated people to great feats of artistic brilliance. This is a good example.

  • Breathtaking!! Brought my tears!! It's been a long time since I've heard anything this beautiful!! Thank you!!!!

  • spiritually moving! you have captured the message of the hymn quite well! Bravo!

  • @jondemusiq I know, i come tears when I reflect on what the angels sound like

That concession alone carries with in it the seeds of faith. " Lord I believe help my unbelief".

    Peace.

  • The beauty of the music and of the rendition by this choir speraks for itself, music is best listened to with closed eyes, the liturgy is not the mystery at all..our ability to create music and to enjoy it is however.

  • Let me explain hell. Imagine an aluminum vice, white hot. Imagine you have titanium testicles. Imagine that the only way you can feel no pain is to flatten your once-conducting vascular tool so thinly than God, even wearing an electron microscope, could not discern it at all, even if braille were upon it's ethereal surface. You cannot imagine what God doesn't want you to endure. Forever. - Dr. Joseph Huntington,

  • sound quality is appalling, the singing however is heavenly

  • @MrJediNinjaPirateMan Many atheists have the wrong impression of hell: while it is eternal torture, you forget what its primary quality is: separation from God. You see, God does not make you want to be with Him. If a man is completely moral, honest and loving, yet wants nothing to do with God, he'll get his wish. That's what hell is- separation from God.

And yet, if there's any chance that what inspired this is more than psychology, I would certainly want to know. :) I think there's enough reason to at least entertain the idea. Just a thought...not trying to make you believe anything unless you can do so with intellectual honesty. But I find that sometimes to find truth we have to think outside the box of what we've learned to accept as possible. Maybe our finite minds can only grasp a small portion of reality...

  • Like this if you hate it when you're listening to a piece like this on youtube and it starts buffering with just 2 minutes to go.
