i do not trust this as is ---some things are correct but, many important things left out.

@Z8llama You can start "training" a backup reed when you don't need it (i.e. you are playing regularly with another reed) - that way, if the one you are using regularly gets damaged, you can immediately switch to the backup one (which you have been breaking-in over several weeks). So it doesn't really take as much effort as it sounds. Of course, I may have no idea what I'm saying (since I'm only a student), but this has worked for me over several years.

Can you say a bit more about sealing the reed. Does this happen just once? I have heard that some folks use ash or dirt to seal. Please advise. Thanks.
