I was from Santa Cruz andI took a surf trip up to Shelter cover in 1977 in the summer with good south swell and it was MT. A few surfers came on the weekend but it was mellow. I went back in '97 and a bunch of "locals" gave me a rash of shit for surfing "their" spot. Everywhere in California is crowded now.

I agree with Kona, I grew up s stone throw away from this spot, when i was a kid we had almost all to our selfs with an occasional hsu student. slowly it became more and more over crowded over the course of the last 10 years our so. but even with the crowds its a very beautiful wave when it works that produces surf for every style and level of surfing. respect the old timers and locals and go surf

holy shit i have never seen camel this good...i was at moonstone last month and it broke like that except a little smaller but this is an awesome video thanks for posting it -max
yes this is a surf spot. Agro longboarders and mellow shortboarders. Cold water that will crush your ego. So. Cal. surfers stay home. That in shortboarder in the middle of the video rips. who is it? I grew up here and it was better when only a dozen of us surfed in humboldt. I live in Kona now. It is really nice to be in trunks over sharp coral reef. ALOOOOOOOHA!!

@kanoadrian I don't know who the shortboarder is -- talented though. Later

Yep -- right between Luffenholtz and Moonstone. It's also called Houda Point.

Yep that's me at 1:13 to one 1:17. Talk about weird?!? If you look I have my camera in my right hand and I am wearing a green flannel. I took alot of pictures of this day. I had a guy tell me that the camel hadn't broke this well for over 30 years!!!

That's pretty funny. That was the best I've seen there in a long time, but not 30 years. When I started body boarding in about 1985 that spot would work like that most times the swell was big enough and/or the tide was low enough for the break to start right at the rock. Far fewer people back then too. It seemed to quit working consistently after a couple of years. The sand shifts so much there-probably takes good luck to be there at the right time. Later this week could be good if not too big.
