This isn't intended to be an actual mod, as I have no idea how to do anything beyond testing it myself. I was toying with MCP and decided to try out an idea I had. The premise is that there is a chance for smoothstone to fall like sand when you mine nearby blocks. You have to be careful when mining. Sometimes no blocks fall, sometimes a few blocks fall, and sometimes an entire room collapses.

I was very surprised to see the result working as perfectly as I imagined it. The chance for stone to be disturbed by a nearby event is roughly 33%. This means a 33% chance for adjacent blocks to fall when you mine a block, and then a 33% chance for blocks adjacent to a falling block to also fall. This keeps happening until no more blocks have passed the roll to fall. This number can be changed, but I think it worked out pretty well.

I tried to brighten the image, as I know how irritating it is when videos are dark. Still a little dark. Sorry.

  • The biggest complaints I have with this have already been mentioned by other commentors, the most obvious being that it's just too sensitive. Like someone else suggested, perhaps add a kind of stone which spawns naturally about 1/4 as often as regular stone and is more likely to cause a cave in? Think of it like sand versus sandstone. Maybe shale or something like that?

  • @pseudocaveman I like this idea: a particular block that when mined can cause nearby stone to collapse. This would solve several problems: the player could avoid collapsing the cave by not mining these vulnerable blocks, and it would prevent player creations from being destroyed, for the lack of nearby shale. It would also make cave-ins less common, by changing the occurrence of shale blocks. Nice!

  • kindof pointless

  • @HupFlupper Can you elaborate? I think it would drastically change the way one adventures through caves. I can picture a group of miners digging through a cave, and one of them digs the wrong block and suddenly they're all separated and lost, digging towards each other. That sounds exciting to me!

  • This one mod would all but destroy any creative building in Minecraft. Do not want.

  • I like the idea, if you decreased the chances of a cave in, it might be pretty amazing! In my oppinion, you should be able to build pillars to make the stone stay standing, I know this is possible, but I am to lazy of a modder to make this, I'm also working on a different mod, so I wouldn't be able to make it, =/

  • @Diethoc Lol this exactly I commented the same thing before I saw you post.

  • I like this mod. I want a mod that causes a cave in like 10 - 30% of the time unless you support it. Like say a 'Support Beam' item, stick it on the wall like you do with a ladder and it stop blocks within a certain radius from collapsing. But without the support beam placed, you could still mine but you would likely have a cave in. I also want this to happen for all types of blocks. Caves and everything would still stand but once you mine the blocks out then the collapsing comes into play.

  • @zanguusu You Have apparently solid stone blocks that are so unstable that any adjacent change knocks them loose. That is what is useless about this mod. I've seen more stable mud than this.

  • i like your sound effects. :S

  • Fuck everything about this.

  • It's brilliant - but too sensitive.
