This waterfall is the tallest of the many in this Gulch. Apparently there are more higher up but they are inaccessible from this trail. This waterfall was one of 7 that we counted in this small area. They were all a few hundred feet tall or more. The Oheo gulch is a magical place that has a long, storied history as told by the hawaiians who have lived around Hana Maui. While we were here many rocks fell down into the pool from high on the cliff.
We love visiting & exploring this area, yet it is so often called by the wrong names. The pools are correctly called the Oheo Gulch Pools in the Kipahulu District of Haleakala National Park. It is located in the Kipahulu Valley along the southeastern slope of Haleakala [Latitude: 20.66611 : Longitude: -156.04472]. Using the proper spelling / name of 'Ohe'o Gulch or 'Ohe'o Gulch Pools is a form of respect. And this is the ~400 foot waterfall, named Waimoku.
