  • Oh it does damage the rock. most people try to use non destructive tools such as nuts or cams. funny that a power drill is illegal yet folks can hammer pitons in everywhere.

  • @yosemitephotos A Piton would go into an existing crack only scaring or marking up the existing rock, where drilling a hole removes existing rock & material.

    Pitons remove tons of rock! Just look at Serenity Crack, The Stigma or the head wall on the Shield. Prime examples of how much damage pitons have ravaged on Yosemite. The bolts next to the Stigma have removed a 100th of the amount of material that the pitons did.
