Here is late 19th Century and early 20th Century actor and comic singer Edward M. Favor (1856-1936) singing McGinty at the Living Pictures from 1904 on a Columbia Black Wax 2minute Cylinder record. The Phonograph is a 1901 Columbia Model AB (MacDonald) Graphophone. The AB was a very unique graphophone capable of playing both the regular 2 minute size cylinders as well as the large 5" Concert cylinders. This was accomplished by sliding a 5" Mandrel over the existing 2 minute mandrel and than adjusting a wingnut locking lever on the side of the graphophone to adjust the height of the Mandrel.

  • Do you have any videos of the 5 inch cylinders playing? I have never seen or heard one!

  • In answer to your request, I have just completed a video of the same Columbia AB in the 5" setting with the telescoping 5" Mandrel in place, playing a 5" Concert Cylinder. You can find by just checking my videos. It is the Yankee Shuffle by Sousa's band. Hope you like it.

  • Thank you for your comment. Isn't it amazing how these wonderful old machines with there primitive form of recordings and mechanics can still give so much enjoyment over 100 years later ?

  • It always makes me chuckle hearing the shouter announcing the title before the song begins.

  • Interesting recording! I haven't heard of this one before.

  • Another great record! I get much more enjoyment from antique phonographs than modern music players

    Thanks

  • You have some awesome players. I'm jealous. The cylinders are one aspect of music collecting I haven't gotten into...yet. I've enjoyed everything you've posted since I subscribed. Thanks.

  • A beautiful machine! Thanks for sharing these tunes with us!
