The incomparable Peggy Lee sings "He Needs Me" on TV in 1955. (NOTE: This footage is incomplete. There is a major skip during the bridge of the song.) Peggy introduced this song by Arthur Hamilton (of "Cry Me a River" fame) in the 1955 movie "Pete Kelly's Blues," a performance that brought her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Nina said that she learned the song from Peggy. This clip here is not Peggy's original version but a rendition made for a TV special promoting the movie in which the song was debuted. For Peggy's debut rendition in the movie, see "Related Videos," clip titled "He Needs Me & Sugar."

In the movie, "Pete Kelly's Blues", Peggy sang this song but also another gorgeous melody which is very rarely heard called "I Never Knew". I found it, once, on an old Peggy Lee, two-disc collection which I subsequently lost and I have never heard the song since. Both songs are tremendously evocative and I love them dearly.
