NASA's SOlar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) blasts off from Cape Canaveral (Kennedy Space Center) in Florida this morning to begin a mission to study the Sun in greater detail than ever before. SDO lifted off on a United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket from Space Launch Complex 41. SDO wasa successfully placed into orbit 2 hours later by the Centaur upper stage of the launch vehicle.

  • My zoom locked up 90 sec. before launch so I had to panic with seconds left. Then the tape died three minutes after launch, so I guess I got lucky on this one.
