  • It's so crazy here if you went into a convenience store and bought a soda, a sandwich and a bag of chips, the sandwich would be taxed at 10% if it's hot, and the soda and chips would be taxed at 2.5%, unless it was sold as a combo meal then all of it will be taxed at 10%. Also, the immediate consumption tax can vary from city to city. It's 10.5% where I live and 11.5% in the next city over. Welcome to Virginia.

  • The Michigan tax is just 6% on anything that's not food. There aren't any special food taxes for McDonalds or anything like that. We get charged the sales tax at McDonalds, but there's no tax on food and none of this 10% for prepared foods, etc. bullshit. It's just straight 6% tax on non-edible items.

  • The sales taxes in VA are crazy. General retail sales tax is 5%, food tax (groceries) is 2.5 %, tax on prepared food for home consumption is 5.5% and I believe tax on food for immediate consumption is 10%. Part of it is determined by whether the food is hot or cold. Check some of your grocery receipts and you'll see the different taxes on the things you bought. How much are the taxes in Michigan?
