Hit jazz song very popular circa 1966 in Los Angeles (the cooks, who called the shots on what music got played in the backround, at a UCLA residence hall where I was washing dishes, made sure we all heard the best in jazz) because drive-time FM jaz show DJ used this as his show introductory song.

Was washing dishes there one late afternoon when I heard of Martin L. King Jr death, now that I think of it. Wow the atmosphere, in the entire residence hall that night, like at a morgue or funeral, and not any New Orleans style one either. They shut the music off in fact during the dinner time. An inner earthquake of dread and horror it seemed like by every person there.
if you like this you will love the classic Adderley-Miles side:

  • if you like this, i'd definitely recommend the entire album, not an insipid cut on it. low down ency groove goin' totally in the pocket. i suppose this precise sound and mood was inspired by the universally admired Somethin' Else album on the Blue Note Label, with Julian Cannonball Adderley and Miles Davis, Hank Jones (p), Sam Jones (b), and Art Blakey (d), one of almost every jazz critic's top 5 albums of all time list. very good sounding on vinyl if you can find it.

  • Richard Wyands' tasteful piano comping: as great as anything I've heard by Wynton Kelly, arguably the greatest piano accompanist in jazz.

  • My gosh I've been looking for this for over twenty years! I knew it was Gigi but didn't know the title. This is a very special tune. :-)

  • great piece-thanks for post

  • Great bit of music and interesting little historical snapshot too. Thanks for putting it up.
