It's Sri Lankan Independence Day. But this crowd in Sydney has not gathered to celebrate.

Instead, it's demanding international action to force a ceasefire between Sri Lanka's army, and Tamil Tiger separatists.

Sri Lanka's armed forces say they have encircled the remaining rebels in a small slice in jungle in the northeast of the country, and are close to crushing one of Asia's longest-running insurgencies.

Aid agencies say a quarter of a million people remain trapped in Tiger-held areas, and at risk from the fighting.

Manomohan Vairamughu, a spokesman for Australia's Tamil community, called the Sri Lankan offensive 'genocide', and said international intervention should bring it to a stop immediately.

[Dr. Manomohan Vairamughu, Tamil Community Member]:
"Haven't we learnt lessons from Gaza, Rwanda, Serbia? And once people are killed they never come back. Finding a solution after thousands of people are killed is not going to be of any use."

The protest comes a day after the United States, European Union, Japan and Norway urged Tamil Tigers to consider surrendering to avoid further casualties.

Despite international concern for civilians, Sri Lanka's government is unlikely to be deterred from its pursuit of victory.

  • I came to know that the sinhala buddhist are preserving The Buddha's Tooth in sri lanka for thousands of years! Although, they're preserving the tooth! They are not preserving the buddha's teaching's! The Buddha taught his diciples to follow Ahimsa but now they are following Himsa(violence)!Which is a wrong path to enlightenment!

  • The United Nations accused LTTE of preventing tens of thousands of civilians from leaving the northeastern jungle. A growing number of people trying to leave have been shot and sometimes killed, the UN office in Sri Lanka said in a statement, adding that the Tigers were recruiting child soldiers as young as 14 years old. The UN also said the Tigers had stopped 15 of its local staff and 75 of their dependants from leaving the war zone, and had forcibly recruited one of its staff on Sunday.
