My name is Doctor Sal Raichbach, Clinical Director for The Ambrosia Treatment Centers of the Palm Beaches and today I would like to speak about dual diagnosis. There are many names to a dual diagnosis, others call it comorbidity some even mention coexisting. Usually that means is someone who has been identified has a person who is sick from drug or alcohol dependences may have developed or may have had a previous exciting diagnosis of ether depressive disorders, major depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, generalizing anxiety disorders, social phobias, somatoform disorders where we actually develop physical symptoms based on the way we are mentally thinking, and personality disorders, narcissistic, histrionic. People who have difficulty disassociating themselves from who they are and what they do. The importance of understanding mental health in substance abuse treatment is that many times the factors that leads people to hide behind a bottle or behind a their drug of choice is the fact that they are suffering mentally. About 20 years ago we termed a person who is suffering from a mental health condition as being mentally ill. That carried a lot of stigma people did not like the idea of being called mentally ill. The first thought that came to peoples minds is when thinking about mentally illness is that they were maybe skitsofrantic. Which is completely false. We have found out that a high percentage of people who suffer from alcohol or drug dependency suffers from bipolar disorder, which basically says that people have instability of moods. Well you use drugs and alcohol and your going to have instability of moods, but we need some time to really think about how our mental health actually affects our thinking our cognition an interpretation of our everyday stressors. Where some people can handle stress without hiding behind a bottle or a pill. Those that are suffering from a mental health diagnosis may not be able to learn how to handle that without their drug of choice. So it is important that we look at both the mental health and the substance abuse and make it a one treatment to heal the mind and the body.
