this is probably one of his best solos, cause its funky timing, but it flows better than alot of his solos.

Its a shame when YouTube is treated as a rating system for true giants of their instruments--particularly now that drumming has descended to little more than demonstration of rudiments-mastery. Roach INVENTS Bebop (along w Bird, Diz, Monk & a few others) and shouldn't be subjected to a humiliating rating by every wanna-be thinking that the purpose of drumming is to demonstrate how many hours they've spent w their flashlight under the blankets, paradiddling frantically after mom & dad are asleep.
I heard a lot about Max Roach drumming so I decided to check it out. And then I stumble on solo like this. For me it's real mess.. I can't compare this drumming to opinion that Max Roach is one of the best jazz drummers. Maybe I can't spot it. Sorry for english.
Everybody has their own likes and dislikes, but when it comes down to it a drum solo is an interpretation unique to each individual, so what sounds like s h i t to one person might be the best damn solo in the world to another. Stop trying to critique everybody and start seeing what you can learn from each individual. It'll make you a better drummer and thats what we should be trying to accomplish. Don't mean to sound preachy, just trying to give some good advise.
What year is this clip from? It most likely predates Rashied's rise with the Coltrane group in 1966. Regardless, I think Rashied would have admitted that Max was the reason a lot of free drummers were able to do their thing.
