What are you using to record?
It might have something to do with the codec. Xvid or DivX (or even Fraps) seem to be the ones of choice for compatability with Movie Maker.

when i drag it in it gives me no other choice, and when i look at the properties it just comes up with audio as the type

That is a little odd. I've never had that happen. Are you sure you're dragging it into the "movie" bar and not the "audio" bar?
its a torrented file that runs for 20 or so minuits

That might be the problem. It seems the file and codec used simply isn't compatable with WMM. An alternative is to convert it into a different filetype.
Format Factory is free to use and fullfills this perpose. Try converting it into a .wmv type. You'll have to mess around with the settings and it might be more effort than it's worth.
If you only want a clip and have recording software (e.g Guncam) or the like, you can use that to "rerecord" that scene.
Otherwise I'm at a total loss. Sorry.

well im not sure whar codec is but what im trying to do is load an avi. or wmv. file onto wmm, but if thats the case and it only takes wmv. what can i get to change it to wmv. without changing the quality dramaticaly

It will take other filetypes, but clearly it just doesn't like the codec your file is rendered in.
Do a google search for Format Factory. I cannot post the link here because Youtube will automatically remove the comment.
