I do not understand why, but these locomotives are the most beautiful machines on earth, in my opinion. No modern aerodynamic vehicle with the nicest paint job can compare. That's even with the exposed plumbing, and bare metal moving parts

@Cockroach2008 One of the greatest feats of American engineering and you suggest we throw it away like a tin can?
-
What's the size comparison between Big Boy, and, say, The Flying Scotsman in the UK?
-
Would love to see all surviving Big Boys resurrected and returned to service. If anything can restore pride in American know how, the steam locomotive can do it.
-
I remember everytime we went into Omaha when i was little i wondered how that got up there
-
I MIGHT be mistaken......but I believe a lot of the early photos are mine. Wonder how that happened?!
-
Excellent illustration of the difficulty of parking a massive 4-8+8-4 Alco single-expansion in a public park. If any Big Boy has a good chance of being resurrected, it's UP #4014 in SoCal, where the dry climate has minimized deterioration---I say, put in new tubes and a new crown sheet and let's see where the boiler leaks air, as the first stage of the rebuild.

@Cockroach2008 Steam locomotives made history (and still are) and that's why they're saved from scrap. It seems to me that you only care about money. Money can only buy so much, and history is NOT one of those things.
-
What a shame. Each time we move these locos from near by rails, we move them further away from being restored by our future children.
#4023 should be givin the privilege of running again! I have always been fascinated with the Big Boys and wanted to see one in action
