I remember when I was a kid and saw this episode. For the rest of the series I wondered, "is he ever going to recover?" It all makes sense now... damn English dubs ruining anime.

Hey, Sven not dying worked out well for the dubbers.
Later on, Sven's "twin brother" was brought into the story.
The dubbers just brought Sven back.
And, hey, at least he got to show up in Voltron Force.
