Scene from the great 1960 war film showing the events of May 1941. The battle scenes were created from a mixture of war footage, filmed footage of guns firing and model work. I think models look very convincing with all the smoke and water effects as well and far better than using real ships that did not look right.

British battlecruiser HMS Hood was sunk on 24 May 1941 at the Battle of the Denmark Strait by the German battleship Bismarck, which was attempting to break-out into the North Atlantic to disrupt merchant shipping of supplies to Great Britain. Of the Hood's crew of 1,418 men there were just 3 survivors. The loss had a profound effect on British morale as the Hood was the flagship of the Home Fleet and considered one of the finest ships in the Royal Navy, however in actuality she had badly needed a refit to improve her obsolete armour, but that was impossible due to the outbreak of war in 1939. After the sinking Winston Churchil ordered the Royal Navy to track down and sink the Bismarck at all costs and an overwhelming force of two aircraft carriers, three battleships and ten smaller vessels caught up with and sank the Bismarck on 27 May 1941 with the loss of 1,995 of her crew of 2,200.

  • My mum's boyfriend was one of the three survivors.By the time he returned to Liverpool she was wearing a black crepe arm band in his memory! He was reported KIA again, so she rewore the black crepe arm band but he arrived on her doorstep. The third time he was torpedoed he was Killed in Action.Mum was 21 & had already been bombed out of her home twice.War is'nt glorious - except for non-combatant politicians - it's vicious, so those politicians must be made to think twice before they start wars.

  • the model lengths is about 1m -1.5 lomg

  • One of the greatest sea stories of all time - I'm kinda surprised it hasn't received an update!

  • Hood was a beauty but Prince Of Wales was a tough old girl.

  • The sequence had little historical realism but the use of models and actual warships was nice.

  • @MASNSEN10 Well cheer up, you will see your Fuhrer

soon enough... heh heh. With some 10 million+ deaths

on his soul, he's in a VERY SPECIAL PLACE indeed.

  • The special effects were excellent for that era. Sometimes computer generate special effects just don't get it because they can be overwhelming. Another sea going movie " Battle off the river Platte". Or as some of us know it as " Pursuit of the Graf Spee".

  • Bismarck should finished the Prince of wales..

  • @webmaster115 - oh do grow up, you silly little boy.
