Here are two clips from the 1945 Sherlock Holmes episode 'The house of fear' starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as our heroes, this time trying to prevent further murders in a castle on a Scottish clifftop, permanent residence to a group of sworn 'Comrades' who one by one mysteriously disappear.
The first clip shows us Holmes carefully filling and lighting his pipe with Watson criticising him for his choice of tobacco!
The second clip (WATCH OUT, SPOILER!) is the finale where Holmes explains how it was a portion of pipe tobacco that made the culprits give themselves away.

NB The language spoken is German as this clip is taken from a broadcast by German television and therefore dubbed. Subtitles by me.

  • At least Holmes didn't smoke his Coke in a pipe

  • Basil only smoked a pipe because of his role as holmes. Also he would only smokehis won Petersons

  • Holmes smoked a type of tobacco called Black Shag, which was, in those days, cheap and very strong.

  • put that in your pipe and smoke it!
