TIS DIKAIOSYNIS ILIE NOITE / Sun, who truly knows the nature of justice
Lyrics: Odysseas Elytis
Music: Mikis Theodorakis
First Performance: Grigoris Bithikotsis
Other Performances: Giorgos Dalaras

Sun, who truly knows the nature of justice
and you, glorious wreath of myrtle
do not, Im begging you, please, do not
fail to remember and let my homeland sink into oblivion!

It has bare lofty mountains that take the shape of eagles,
vines that grow in neat rows on the slopes of its volcanoes
and homes more brilliant
neighbouring the glittering sea!

Struck by lightning, I keep turning back these
grieving hands to shield me from the storm
Im calling on my old friends
to go forward into terrors and bloodshed.

Sun, who truly knows the nature of justice
and you, glorious wreath of myrtle
do not, Im begging you, please, do not
fail to remember and let my homeland sink into oblivion!

Translator's apology: I can't hope to do justice to the Greek. Elytis's verse is complex, rich and vibrant. He builds so many layers of meaning into so few words. This version is, I think, a little free, but should be helpful for understanding the poem.

  • And how deeply sad life may be, how deeply hurting, and wounding our soul.... the Greek bouzouki helps to overcome... to find the heart of the other, to connect, to smile, through tears, and create the smile of friendship, humanity, respect, Greece, Mikis, the voices, the clapping hands....

    And go on.
