Man, I absolutely LOVE CM....but some of the comments are ridiculous. Making great music doesn't absolve someone from their mistakes and vices. Nor does it put them on a level above being human. As far as all the difficulties Mingus and others endured....that's what challenged them and pushed them to greatness. If the greats didn't suffer as they did....they'd probably not have made the music that they did. The pain in CM's music is one of the things we all love and identify with. IMHO

Man, you can actually hear his lonely looking bass crying on the side of the street as he's being carted off...

You would think with all the things that this man accomplished with his music that the police could maybe ignore a hypodermic needle. . . Then again, he wasn't appreciated much while he was still with us.

The picture at the end is from the cover of Mingus's album "Lock 'Em Up"... clever.

"Theres sheets of music all over the floor that people are stepping on" Fucking assholes destroying and disrespecting the creations of a legend like Charles Mingus

@vectortemple II may have heard it wrong, but I've always thought Mingus was responding to the reporter's question; Who do you feel is treating you unfairly? with the answer: It can't be all these badges can it? In any event, this is one of the most heartbreaking pieces of film I've ever seen. I don't know who that hateful, evil little man was who appears in the next shot, but I get the impression he's the cause of all this. I'm sure he felt no shame, which is why he earns it all the more.
"I hope that the communists blow you people up, man. Ya dig? That's what I am. A red child."
