  • if there is a second time around i hope john and i are sharing watches at the wheel and trading off tunes like we did years ago

  • This is not an easy tune to play on the fiddle .. and yet the magnificent JH here, as per all of the great musical legends in history, makes it look & sound so damned easy. A beautiful rendition of this famous old-time tune here by JH. Fans should also access Mark O'Connor's second-ever album, "Pickin In The Wind", from way back in 1975 .. for an equally fine version of the same tune. John Hartford, by the way, was a key contributing musician (banjo) on that fabulous album.

  • Either by mistake or intention, local fiddlers tend to call this tune "Moonlight on the Water." By any name, it's beautiful and Hartford does it well.

  • The great Texas old-time fiddler Benny Tholmasson, or maybe some say by his father Luke. Benny was perhaps most famous as Mark O'Connor's mentor.

  • i work on the river and play my fiddle to pass the time

any idea who wrote this song

  • I really like John Hartford and am old enough to remember watching him on tv when I was a kid...I think the concert movie "Down from the Mountain" was filmed not too long before he passed away ...

  • The name is "Midnight on the Water."
