Jean Goldkette (1899 - 1962) noted for all-star band and recordings between 1926 and 1929. Lived in Greece and Russia, came to US in 1911. Pianist in Chicago and Detroit, where he settled in and bought the Graystone Hotel Ballroom there and booked bands. Formed big band 1924 and recorded for Victor. Russ Morgan joined 1926 as arranger and organizer, helped get outstanding musicians. Excellent band 1926-27, at times featured Don Murray, Joe Venuti, Bix Beiderbecke, Frankie Trumbauer, Eddie Lang, Danny Polo, Andy Secrest, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, sterling Bose, Bill Rank and others. Used Detroit as base, travelled and played New York. Payroll large, probably a factor in the band's demise. Goldkette also booked McKinney's Cotton Pickers, other units including one that evolved into Casa Loma Orchestra (later led by Glen Gray). In early 1930s did some radio. Gave up booking, later worked as agent. Occasional work as classical pianoist. In mid-1939 presented concert of American music at Carnegie Hall with 90-piece orchestra, no great sucess. In 1944 led combo in Detroit. Occasionally active in music in later 1940s and 1950s. Settled in California in 1961.
