These cartoons are done better than anything made today and they had no computers to help them, either.
In "those days" movie theaters, at least in big markets, were all owned by the movie companies; going to smaller markets where there were more independent theaters, their patrons clearly preferred Popeye 2-1 over Mickey Mouse who, by this time, was also in color!
In Segar's original "Thimble Theater" strip (before Popeye's introduction in January 1929), 'MrColigings', the main charcaters were Olive, Castor {brother}, Cole and Nana {parents} Oyl, and her boyfriend, Ham Gravy. Ham vanished in 1930, as Popeye became the "star" of the strip [the title became "Thimble Theater starring Popeye"].
@fromthesidelines Wasn't her father named Cole and her brother named Castor? I think she had another suitor, a guy named Ham Sandwich. Interestingly, they were all in the live action movie. They even gave Castor a bigger part than Wimpy.

I love this cartoon but I don't like the way Olive Oyl is treated at the end; Popeye should have caught her.
Still, the thing that is so great about this cartoon is the music and the way the whole thing is done "in time;" quite remarkable.
I also like the way the tuba and guitar players switch to string bass and banjo at the climax; all very well done.
