SOOKE -- On the day when parents were supposed to pick up their children from Camp Thunderbird, an old growth tree caught on fire. Just after 9:30 a.m. Metchosin and Sooke Fire Departments were called to hose down the 54 m tree before the fire spread.
No campers were injured with the fire site well away from the main lodge, but parents were blocked from using the narrow road to get in, and children were held until all danger had subsided.
The tree was eventually cut down and chopped into pieces, and the cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
Firefighters are reminding the public the region is still under and extreme fire warning, and if you see any signs or smoke to call emergency crews immediately
