They call this an "aria." Three minutes of dialogue is a l0000ng time in a movie. In staged Shakespeare, yeah. But this is so awesomely a great speech! It is one of best aria's in film history. And so well done by Hal Holbrook. "...re-runs of I Love Lucy" were cancelled...was it really worht $20 billion to go to another planet...how much does any dream cost...not the President, the Vice President...put his feet up on Woodrow Wilson's desk..." LOVE IT!

this is in my top 5 all time scenes, simply wonderful with no cutaway with the camera

@pillownaut Any remake would not measure up to this. It would be like remaking Gone With The Wind with Lady GaGa as Scarlet and Adam Sander as Rhett Butler. And score by some video game keyboarder.

Holbrook right here is certainly Oscar worthy. A scene that's stuck with me in a lifetime of watching movies.

You have to wonder what all Nixon was referring to when he talked about those cans of worms, bay of pigs, and other unkown events.
Remembering Gus Grissom Chadwick and White.

Fantastic monologue...Holbrook is truly one of the greats.

Kinda reminds of of the Hubble fraud ("Can't afford another scew-up").
I tested the guidance systems on that project AND the large mirror (in 1985). My bosses knew it was defective - just lied to NASA. Same time they were losing other projects and laying-off as many as a dozen people each day. Little wonder they told NASA "It's OK". Trouble is - even after I reported everything to my state senators (NY) - they covered it all up for a $600k 'contribution' to Pres Clinton.

Good delivery.. a baddy is so much better when you hear his reasoning.
Plus this deserves more than 447 views imo

Great speech from back in the days when great actors could memorize a script...
It also shows that things never change!
Thanks G! I agree, one of the best speeches ever, particularly in film about real space travel that turns into science fiction, LOL... have you heard that Warner is considering a re-make? The speech Holbrook makes is just as prevalent in today's politics as it was back then... (sad statement on the lack of progress), and I wonder which actor will get that "aria" in the new film??
