________Revelation 21:2_________
Then I, John, saw the holy city,
New Jerusalem, coming down out of
heaven from God, prepared as a
bride adorned for her husband.

--LYRICS--
Last night I lay a-sleeping, there came a dream so fair,
I stood in old Jerusalem beside the temple there.
I heard the children singing and ever as they sang,
Me thought the voice of angels from heaven in answer rang.
Me thought the voice of angels from heaven in answer rang.

Jerusalem! Jerusalem!
Lift up your gates and sing,
Hosanna in the highest!
Hosanna to your King!

And then me thought my dream was changed, the streets no longer rang,
Hushed were the glad Hosannas the little children sang.
The sun grew dark with mystery, the morn was cold and chill,
As the shadow of a cross arose upon a lonely hill.
As the shadow of a cross arose upon a lonely hill.

Jerusalem! Jerusalem!
Lift up your gates and sing,
Hosanna in the highest!
Hosanna to your King!

And once again the scene was changed; new earth there seemed to be;
I saw the Holy City beside the tideless sea;
The light of God was on its streets, the gates were open wide,
And all who would might enter and no one was denied.
No need of moon or stars by night, or sun to shine by day;
It was the new Jerusalem that would not pass away.
It was the new Jerusalem that would not pass away.

Jerusalem! Jerusalem!
Lift up your gates and sing,
Hosanna in the highest!
Hosanna to your King!
Hosanna in the highest!
Hosanna to your King!

  • Lovely to hear this so well sung. I used to sing this as a student and am now inspired to record it for You Tube. Bravo Richard Crooks - perhaps I could do it half as well.

  • I am sure you will do it very, very well.

    You are more than welcome to add your version as a video response to this.

  • A magnificent rendering of this great and touching sacred song, now no longer heard on the air-waves swamped by obscene commercial rubbish. This record is in good condition, and I am fortunate to possess the same record in my collection. Interestingly it once belonged to a radio station.

  • For me, this is the definitive version. Beautiful.

  • @vpo2g2 I have a look on the Tube for Richard Bonelli singing The Holy City adn there isnt anyhitng. Maybe some wher else. Have a listen to 1`8 yeard old Australian Mark Vincent singing The Holy City at the Carols by Candelight on the 17th December last yhear. This kid has a brilliant future ahead of him. Ther is one version wqhich is absolutely lus due to technical problems but the real one is a gem. Gives on goose bumps to listen to him performing. A credit to Australia

  • my church sings this all the time :) it's probably my favorite song :) good job!!

  • A good version.....but find Richard Bonelli's version and you will be in the Holy City!

  • Thanks Vulcan,. I'll keep a welcome in the window for VoceVersatile as well.

  • Tonight is the anniversary of my father's death - Richard Crooks was his favourite singer. This is for you, Dad.XXX

  • @baghend

    Yes, Crooks was a superb tenor. No one exists on the operatic stage today, indeed for a very long while,

    that can match the quality of his singing. His diction was flawless due to perfect placement of the voice. A lost art.

  • Final Chorus:

    Jerusalem, Jerusalem,

    Sing for the night is o'er!

    Hosannah in the highest, Hosannah for evermore!

    Hosannah in the highest, Hosannah for evermore!
