Need to wipe your G1 because the phone is corrupted or frozen, e.g., your G1 keeps rebooting over and over again without getting to the desktop/home page?

Are you a non-geek/newbie and not sure how your phone got messed up?

Ready to sell your soul to Satan to get out of your predicament and able to use your G1, again?

Have your friends asked "Why are you carrying that brick?" or "What are you pounding on the table and why are you swearing at it?"

Is your G1 so clogged up that it's time to soak it in Liquid Drano?

Well help has arrived.

Here is how you do a factory wipe or hard reset. (Note: this procedure assumes you can't get to the G1's reset "button" located in the Android OS settings menu and you DO NOT know what the terms "jailbreak" or "root" mean.)

Update: This tutorial is for non-rooted phones.

The hard reset (or wipe) will put your phone back to the way it was when you first opened the box.

Inside Information: THIS IS THE "SECRET" PROCEDURE T-MOBILE TECH SUPPORT HAS NON-GEEK CONSUMERS GO THROUGH AS A LAST RESORT WHEN THE G1 CANNOT RECOVER FROM A CRASH. (This is done before the CSR says to send the phone back for a replacement.)

Sidenote: Don't feel bad, these phones do a lot nowadays, they crash often and need to be reset. And sometimes the phone will freeze and refuse to reboot. This procedure should save your butt.

My video covers both hard and soft resets.

WARNING: The hard reset procedure erases all third party applications you installed on your G1 and reinstalls the G1's basic factory applications and the operating system. But I am sure you don't mind if your phone is not working.

Note: The "default" apps and OS are on the G1's ROM chip (read only memory). There is no CD or download from Android or T-Mobile required to restore your G1.

Doesn't get any easier than that! Default apps include calendar, contacts, browser, phone interface, Android Market, Google Maps, etc.

Any apps or data on your SD chip are unaffected by this procedure. Your SIM card is unaffected. In other words, anything on your micro-SD chip will remain intact.

IF IT WILL PUT YOU AT EASE, YOU CAN REMOVE THE CHIP BEFORE DOING THE WIPE.

BONUS WARNING: Be sure a hard reset is what you want to do. Perform a hard reset only if your G1 is really messed up (and you don't know why). Try the soft reset first to see if that "unfreezes" the phone.

Bonus Tip: If you are simply giving your G1 a bath and you have settings and passwords on the G1, but not elsewhere, make sure to write down what they are BEFORE doing a hard reset.

Also you should be doing periodic backups of your contacts file and other data for when catastrophe strikes.

REPEAT: A hard reset does NOT affect data on your Micro SD or SIM cards.

However, if your phone is messed up because of something going on when your apps access the MicroSD chip you may have to remove the apps and data off the chip too.

REPEAT (because people keep e-mailing me and asking): A SOFT reset does NOT wipe or erase any data on the phone. A soft reset simply "reboots" your G1 just as you do with your PC.

I like doing a soft reset every couple days, it refreshes the G1 the same as a PC reboot cleans up the PC.

When your G1 is starting to run slow or is acting up, a soft reset usually fixes the issue. Of course, if you installed a program and then the G1 is acting up, uninstall the offending program just installed.

My video will show that you press a few combination of buttons and keys, voilà, you are done.

Bonus: For the G2 HTC Magic - This phones does not have a keyboard as it is a touchscreen only smartphone. To wipe the G2 Magic::

Press and hold HOME + BACK buttons.

Then press the END CALL key.

The clear data screen should then appear. Wipe away. :)

  • @iramadan1 Did anyone get help with this situation? I am abroad also and my phone was okay as long as I manually set up the network and the wireless. After doing the hard reset, I am stuck as well. I looked at all the comments but do not see any answer to this. Surely there must be an answer. Does anyone have experience at this?
