It's mainly about patience and thinking ahead. You have to build the scene back to front, little by little. I spent probably around 6-7hrs on this, and it was my first skin with this decal system. Just start on something easy - try to create a cartoon character. Then move on to more realistic shading using opacity on the decals. Just takes time.
