I think it's detectable that it's a computer within the first word.

Certainly it is more clear than 5 to ten years ago but try the web site for naturalreader. I am an slp and have a disabled child. natural reader also does mp3 files and has several accents and languages. They also have programmed much more appropriate intonation for questions, exclamations, etc. they all have some level of computer sound and some people cant afford higher quality so this may be ok for some (not sure of the cost comparison, just guessing). do a good web search and try them out.
