can't imagine no other patreoticsongs were sang on this important transformation of power of our government. guess the anthem is reserved for races, and other sports. non the less the power of our flag waving so proudly made me proud. but i did enjoy areatha doing as well as she could under the fridgid cercumstances

I'm not sure if Smith was a musician/composer, or simply just a lyricist in this case, but another possible scenario may have been that he used the original melodies as a template for lyrical meter, syllable count etc..... In which case, he may not have even really cared, or had a "vision" for the melody line.

From a musical standpoint, I prefer a more succinct melody. Having said that, Aretha is fantastic....always has been.

It sounds like what the other guy was trying to say, though....is back in 1831.....soul didn't exist. At least it wasn't something that had been put on the books yet. So, in all probability...Smith meant the melody to be closer to what was originally scored.

But who knows....maybe he was ahead of his time and DID having something more "soul" oriented in his head.

But if it were, you'd know that the song's melody is BASED on Muzio Clementi's Symphony No. 3 in G-major, not equal God Save the King (Queen), usually in D-minor; and that it's been revised twice since the 1830s, neither of which are directly attributed to Smith. Hence my statement. Try again.

No ImmortalSynn, Where do you come up with this stuff? FOR ALL I KNOW is this FACT!!!!! ....The melody is that of the British national anthem, God Save the King or Queen.
