King Of The Castle was a children's drama serial broadcast by ITV in 1977.

After a fight with a local gang leader in the tower block where he lives, Roland(Philip Da Costa) becomes trapped in a malfunctioning lift and is plunged into a bizarre subterranian fantasy world populated by warped versions of people from his everyday life.

In this scene from episode two, Hawkspur(Fulton Mackay) has enlisted Roland in his desperate experiment to create a living being, the result of which is the Ergon(Milton Johns).

  • Ha, if only I'd been around at the time with a VCR, the things I would've recorded! I only heard about KOTC a few years ago and I remember thinking "That sounds amazing, shame I'll never get to see it." But then about a year ago, all the surviving episodes were uploaded to a certain popular torrent site, and I managed to grab the first two. I'll definitely upload what I've got if there's call for it.

  • For years I only had the memory of the theme tune and the scene of a boy strapped down and a creature 'stealing his voice' as the boy cries - I won't...I won't! I was seven years old and it scared me so much I was banned from watching the rest of the series!

70's kids TV drama was bloody brilliant!!

  • I don't think I'd want to watch this again now I'm grown up.

I saw this when I was 6 and think it was one of the scariest things I've seen on TV.

Like a nightmare you have when you're a kid with 'flu.

It's great that so many other people remember it, if only to confirm that I didn't imagine it and I wasn't the only one freaked out by it.

  • The description of a "Construct" here is perfectly fitting to the world of Girl Genius too.

  • "turn around to your right" as if it knows what its right is

  • Where have you sent me now Dr Ashens... -_-

  • I had the name 'Vein' and the memory of a lift and a parallel universe in my head for many years and couldn't remember what the name of the show was. Just discovered this is now our on DVD, and desperately want to get it. Thanks for this preview, I can now die content :)

  • Really glad to have finally found this, and to see its out on DVD. Me and my sister loved it. As soon I started watching this clip it all came back! "The cards lie, they lie"! I'm sure is a line from it we had as a catchphrase!

  • king of the castle as in a boy steps into a lift and takes him down

  • I may be about to make your year. It is now available on DVD! I got my copy a couple of months ago!

  • I seem to remember a bit with a shrunken head. That was enough for me! Scared me daft for the rest of my life! Great stuff!
