MONA LISAS & MAD HATTERS
Elton John
Honky Chateau (1972)

And now I know
Spanish Harlem are not just pretty words to say
I thought I knew
But now I know that rose trees never grow in New York City

Until you've seen this trash can dream come true
You stand at the edge while people run you through
And I thank the Lord there's people out there like you
I thank the Lord there's people out there like you

While Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters
Sons of bankers, sons of lawyers
Turn around and say good morning to the night
For unless they see the sky
But they can't and that is why
They know not if it's dark outside or light

This Broadway's got
It's got a lot of songs to sing
If I knew the tunes I might join in
I'll go my way alone
Grow my own, my own seeds shall be sown in New York City

Subway's no way for a good man to go down
Rich man can ride and the hobo he can drown
And I thank the Lord for the people I have found
I thank the Lord for the people I have found

  • 1972.

    40 years exactly good sir!

  • this is a great song, def one of his greatest. The other day I heard a song that slightly sampled this one, and although very different it still came out very nicely. Only great songs can be used like that throughout the years. I mean it's been like 40 years or more since the song was released.

  • This is a terrific song, on what, in my opinion, is Elton John's greatest work - Honky Chateau. I wore this record out when it was released - played it over and over. I thank the Lord for you, Sir Elton - you are a great man!

  • I FREAKING HATE IT!!!!

  • maybe they just didnt like the song. I cant fathom why, it's an excellent tune. But not liking this song doesnt mean they hate gay people. Thinking that would be as close-minded as a homophobe.

  • or you're watching on youTube and the stupid phone rings and its your kid talking about blaibbety blah blah bloooo and you're like, "dude, youve been out all damn day. Git yer ass home, I'm tryin t'listen on some songs n'shit!!!" Y'know!?

  • thats how i got here man such an amazing song and and an amazing movie

  • Love it

  • Rose trees grow in NYC. They just need an iron lung,
