Poetry Out Loud is a national program funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation partnered with the State Arts Agencies. Beginning in 2006 Poetry Out Loud has had participation from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Last year there were over 300,000 high school participants.

Last year, Wiyaka His Horse Is Thunder of Little Wound High School advanced to the National POL Competition and finished in the top 5. She won a stipend of $1000. Little Wound High School received an additional $500 for the purchase of poetry books. First prize is worth $20,000.

This year, Wiyaka will be sending her taping of The Hate Poem by Julie Sheehan to the SD POL selection committee. If selected to advance, she will need to add two more memorized poems to her repertoire. The National Competition will be held April 26 and 27 in Washington DC.

  • BTW, good looking woman here, lips are a bit big.

I went to a NA village at the base of the smokies in Tennessee and was amazed to see the shops and stereotype buying and selling. After hearing their story and watching the shows I went to KFC just to find some of the portrayer's working, eating and wearing normal clothes.

They are just like everyone else on the REZ.. so maybe my search is in vain.

  • I was hoping to learn a bit about Native American culture and maybe find a NA wife because western society has failed me as a white man but every time I come across something interesting it riddled with stereotype music, names and BS. Seriously, enough with the spirits and chasing horse names. Can I just get what I'm searching for without the crap that goes along with it?

  • what do native woman promise to me

  • i promise to smoke my tobacco of peace in my pipe for you and wear my hair long to show you my promise there will be no more hated and fighting between us . cherokee . paint clan . ( chief running black bear )

  • I hate your clothes....

  • Wow she sound like she really HATES whoever this is addressed to. Wonder why she picked this poem by Julie Sheehan?

  • Wow I was actually intimidated.

  • Funny I was thinking I Love You

  • My daughter is involved in slam poetry and I am forwarding a link to her for her scrutiny. Hate can consume and I see how it could. Stimulating. Peace to all.
