Thanks dcoul1- much appreciated i think ill get that engine after all- Its a PETTER/MCLAREN w/ parsow tranny- i live in canada so its a rare engine here. ive never heard of it before..but it must be close to the specs of a 15 hp petter. I did want to ask you how many liters per hour does yours burn at cruise speed?
i really apreciated your answers,,thanks..btw i meant to thank you sooner but i have been busy

i found a 1930's or so petter/mclaren marine diesel- 20 hp- with parsow transmission 1:1 i think it runs about 1500 rpms.
i wondered- when you put your engine into gear on your other post- it almost sounds like it was about to stall out?..is that considered normal?..or is it because you are running with a huge prop?
no offense- since i am interested in buying one similar to yours but older..would it push a 29 ft steel boat ?
r parts still available?
???

Hi again.:-)
With regard to putting into gear and the engine revs dropping down, I would expect a slight drop in engine revs as it takes the load, before the governor compensates, although the governor on mine does seem to have become 'lazy' and certainly needs adjustment since the rebuild, as the revs do now drop down to the extent that the engine does sometimes stall!
With regard to a 29' steel boat, yes, I'm sure that would be fine. These engines are often to be found in 50'+ narrow boats.

I ran out of characters before I could answer your other question!
Parts specific to the watercooled PH/AV series Petters, such as mine can take a little more searching, but there are plenty of these units still used on the canals in the uk, and in small fishing boats etc. Ebay can be a good place to source spares, and there are stockists of gaskets etc. Lister-Petter themselves no longer hold spares though.

how much hp is this? i have a shot at getting a 20 hp petter/mclaren...but wonder if it is powerful enough to spin a larger prop for my boat...what year is yours?
thx

Hello there.
My engine is 15 and a half hp. The engine was built in 1967, and is the original one to the boat.
I don't know what boat you have, but the torque that these engines have could pull the side of a house down!
These Petters are often to be found in canal boats of 50-60ft or more in length.

If I could get a recording of this i would fall asleep to it every night.

Thankyou for your comments.
It's a lovely sound isn't it!
Since these video clips were taken, the engine has been completely stripped down to every last nut and bolt and rebuilt. It now wears its original shade of Light Battleship Grey paint, and has the correct Petter logos on it. It looks just like new again!
