The manual describes Big Mouser like this:
"Ruler of Level 4, he turned to a life of sleaze after being booted from the Mousketeer Club. (Value 8,000 points)"

The fifth boss in the game, Big Mouser. This boss wouldn't be this much of a joke if he didn't have such a mortal blind spot.

You must have had a glitched version, because I tried the same strategy and I distinctly remember the beams firing towards the center.

If you had the beams firing towards the center then it must be you with the glitched version. I have seen videos of and played multiple versions of this game and never has this trick not worked.

Of course jumping right before the Mouser shoots its lasers might make the lasers cross, but I haven't tried that out.
