James Kalm accompanies viewers on a tour of Mark Bradford's "Nobody Jones". Since his graduation from CalArts in 1997 Bradford has achieved recognition at a breathtaking rate. He has been exhibited in the Whitney museum as a one-man and in the Biennial as well as the São Paulo Biennial in 2006. Marshaling his sources from his South Los Angeles neighborhood, these works bespeak a multi-cultural world, whose disintegrating surfaces depict a frail yet elegant integument.

  • some kind of ghetto chic? james, that just slipped out...

  • seintzeit,

If you read his bio, (available at the Sikkima Jenkins web site) you'll see this isn't too far off the mark, specifically South LA. ( Stream of consciousness and silver leaf not withstanding.)

  • Dude, your voice sounds like a creepy serial killer. Anyway, nice video dude!

  • Aerial map yeah. little like 'lavender mist' i was thinking.

  • james always sounds like hes been wolfing down hammys

  • thanks clement greenberg for clarifying that, but i was responding to james' comment about wanting to get into the glitzy art ghetto...

  • there is nothing naive about this work. naive artists suck and can't help it. thus we pity/cherish the artists effort. these are very complex intesive works. this work is extremely advanced.

  • the important thing is mr. bradfords work, his appearance on the PBS show Art of the 21st Cen.(you can find it on youtube) is really revealing about his character, he's a unique and interesting artist no matter were he comes from.:)

  • you and jerry salz ;)

once you get there all this naive art stuff turns out to be commerce...
