This is a turntable rendering of a Hawaiian Poi Pounder from my "Intro to Maya 3D class at the University of Hawaii Community College in Hilo. This is rendered at 24 fps with a stone jpg file that has been applied to the color channel and bump map channel. A marble texture has also been applied to the bump map channel. Only two lights have been created, a point light and an ambient light. The lava was rock was simulated using a revised "mountain" 2D texture provided by Maya.
The poi pounder is a stone implement that is carved and used to mash the highly nutritious taro root. This starch is mashed, beaten and mixed with water until a "gravy-like", smooth consistency is achieved. Poi is an important staple of Hawaii and the Hawaiian culture and is a mild tasting contrast to more aggressive culinary flavors in Hawaiian condiments and dishes such as luau squid, lomi lomi salmon, Poke (seasoned raw fish), kalua pork and more. It's use is similar to the way that dahl is used in East Indian dishes.
