One of the most requested songs of the 1940s, this lush song was written by Les Brown and Ben Homer with lyrics by Bud Green.

Les Brown is the answer to a trivia question concerning the big-band song that was performed live the most. It was "Thanks for the Memories," Bob Hope's theme song performed by Les Brown and his Band of Reknown, who toured with Hope for years.

The song is about going home, and home for this musician is Freeport, Illinois. Accordingly, scenes of Freeport, familiar to those who live or have lived there, grace this video.

Our hometown newspaper featured this video, and mentioned my two friends who contributed photos, but not me, the one who recorded the song. So to avoid confusion, all parts were played and sung by yours truly.
Recorded on a Boss BR-600 with two guitar parts, bass, and three-part harmony.

  • I know a Sherry Maves. Is she a relative?

  • Thanks for posting. I was born in Freeport. Been in Montana since 2003. You pretty much nailed it for me. I still buy mrs. mikes and have em shipped. Krape Park, oh boy. Growing up on Demeter Drive, I was there a lot. Worked at the Country Club, it was my first job. Swam in the pool in the basement at "The Castle" when I was little, Frank is still missed. I get homesick sometimes. Have only been back for funerals, and that sucks. It is a good place to be from.

  • @camdensdaddy Makes me wonder if I know you. Roger Hayes here. I left Freeport in 1973 to attend SIU-Carbondale. Since then I've only returned for visits. In fact I awoke yesterday in Freeport. After all these years it's still home.

  • My name is Darren Archer, I lived in Freeport and Cedarville as a kid.

I still come out every once in a while to visit family and look at all of the things pictured.

  • Thanks, Darren. Always nice to find a homey.

  • Cool vid but you missed the twin caves and the bong tree in Krape Park. Best darn city park around...until they recently made it a concrete park. Sooooo much parking. Gotta like the disc golf course though.

  • Look again, Woofy. The twin caves are there in the Krape Park section. I've played the disc-golf course at the park, too. Maybe we should play a round next time I'm in town. Roger

  • Ellipsis1771: Yep. Sherry is my Aunt. Been out of touch for a long time. I believe she moved from Cedarville, but really don't know.

  • Don't think we know each other Roger. Sam Maves here. I was born in 75. Yep, still home, my parents still live on Demeter, my sister lives in Lena, brother in Cedarville. Today I wore a Mrs. Mike's t-shirt, just because. The last two times I was there, I felt like even though everything there is familiar, I hadn't been there before. Must be my sobriety....

  • ahh yes my beloved town of Freeport. Its the Halfway house for Chicago convicts.

  • great.

i'm gonna miss this strange depressing but unusually peaceful place.

  • I loved it so much, thank you!

  • If anybody's homesick, lemme know and I'll send some crack and steal something from you. Trust me, it'll be just like being here.

  • This place is really depressing
