  • we use synthetic ropes on all my companies 4x4s it makes no differance if u wind it on loose or tensioned, as when you use it you will find it will upset the lay on the drum anyway, an then pull tight onto the drum, so much so its sometimes quiet hard to pull it out on the free spool as it will be jammed UNDER upper layers.

  • @a33272 Thanks for the helpful info.

  • I am installing this this weekend:

Some say to put the rope under more tension when spooling it (i.e. the weight of the vehicle in neutral). Do you find that tensioning it the way you did is sufficient?

  • @martyr562 With the steel cable it is very important to keep the spool tight and to wind it under pressure to limit wraps sinking down in causing possible damage to the cable. My understanding is that the synthetic rope has less issues with damage of this type but it couldn't hurt to wrap it as tight as you can too. To wrap my steel cable I set the parking brake slightly while in neutral and winched the cable in wrap by wrap.

  • how do you attach the rope?

  • @schulhoff18 The rope is attached to the inside edge of the drum using an allen bolt. The original wire rope was attached at the same location.

  • @NEWEREJK Thanks for the reply, and the video...

  • @NEWEREJK if my rope dosent have a attachment point can i put one on?

  • @slave2misery Both ropes meet or exceed the capacity limits of the winch. The first advantage is that the synthetic rope weighs 1/7 the weight of the wire rope lightening your load, second winding the rope up after use is easier and less damaging to the rope if not coiled exactly straight, and third the synthetic rope does not store elastic energy. If it is to break during a pull it will fall to the ground and not whip dangerously back at you. So "they" say.

  • Another helpful, easy video Dee.

Is synthetic rope stronger than wire rope? Why is this an "upgrade"? Forgive my noob question.
