Willaert was one of the first composers who seriously took up instrumental media. He wrote some 13 instrumental ricercari for 3 and 4 parts. It works well for strings, as in this great performance, as well as recorders, harpsichord, organ, or any other combination of instruments. Willaert knew this, as he says in his introduction that the music is for any combination of instruments. Well played in this performance!
