Derek Watkins must surely be one of THE greatest trumpeters the UK has ever produced. "Benny Goodman Live in Stockholm" was the first record (and double LP) I ever bought in my late teens, and Derek's solo performance on "Willow Weep for Me" still makes the hair stand on the back of my neck over 35 years later. That album is STILL the best record I have ever bought! I think I'm about to start enlarging my DW collection!

Thank you YouTube for introducing me to Derek Watkins! And god bless that he's still very much alive and performing at his peak! Usually, my new discoveries of old timers are either dead or retired. His rendition of "Remembering Chet" at the John Barry Memorial Tribute on June 20, 2011, at the Royal Albert Hall, was what brought me here!

Das verjazzen der Solostimme ist furchtbar. Ich kann ja verstehen, dass der Trompeter zeigen möchte was er kann, aber das ist das falsche Stück dafür.
I think Derek Watsons playing is more fluid and has a better tone than maynard. Maynard can get those high notes but probably couldn't play a song as sweet as Derek does

making the trumpet players in the background in the james last orchestra look like beginners this man, pretty awesome, soft and yet powerful - that's the spirit.
